335. Praise – The “New Song”

The Hebrew word ‘NEW’ means something that has been rebuilt and that is fresh and new.  Elihu, the godly man in Job 32 said, “For I am full of words; the spirit within me constrains me.  My breast is as wine that has no vent; like NEW wineskins, it is ready to burst.  I must speak, that I may get relief and be refreshed; I will open my lips and answer” (Job 32:18-20, Amplified Bible).  This is the only other place in the Old Testament where that particular word ‘NEW’ is used, besides its use in the phrase ‘NEW SONG.’  It is something that has been rebuilt, and is now so fresh that it causes its possessor to burst out!

The Hebrew word ‘SONG’ means to go around singing, celebrating in victory, joyfully.  This word is used in 1 Samuel 18:6 wherein is described a dance and song of victory.

I have found this term ‘NEW SONG’ used nine times in the Bible.

In Psalm 33:3, 40:3, 96:1, 98:1 and 144:9 it is used in the context of the writer being in trouble, desperately crying to the Lord for deliverance from his enemies.  These five Psalms contain statements like,  “But I will sing a new song unto the Lord”, “Make haste to deliver, evils compass me, let them be put to shame who desire my life, rescue me, bow down your heavens, stretch forth your hand, I am poor and needy, do not tarry O Lord.”

In Psalm 149:1-9 it is a little different.  It says that the New Song wrecks vengeance and binds kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron to execute upon them (our spiritual enemies) the judgement.  This honor have all his saints!

Isaiah 42:9 tells about former things passing away and new things being declared.  Then, in verse 10, it says to sing a new song TO the Lord (a song which has never been heard in the heathen world), then the Lord will go forth as a mighty man (verse 13).  He will do mightily against His enemies.  He has held His peace a LONG time, but now He will arise!

The above uses of the phrase ‘New Song’ indicate that:

1.  The Lord puts this New Song in His people.

2.  We sing this New Song to the Lord.

3.  The circumstances are always when we are in need of deliverance and before the manifestation of that deliverance.

4.  That deliverance and destruction of enemies do no come until after that New Song is sung.

The last time the phrase ‘New Song’ is used is in Revelation 14:3.

John saw 144,000 people who are the overcomers, whom Jesus was asking for in Chapters 2 and 3 of the book of Revelation.  You and I are this 144,000 when we stand in the face of impossible circumstances as virgins because there was no lie found in our mouths.  I submit that with the Truth in our lips, first the truth of our sin confessed to Jesus, and then the Truth of the Word poured into our hearts and spoken with cleansed lips, we can overcome any circumstance that comes along.  Truth confessed and spoken frees us from the flesh and brings us into the family, blood covenant and blessings of God’s family.

Now these overcomers are singing this New Song, but it happens during the overcoming process, not after the manifestation of the actual victory. Revelation 14:12 (Amplified Bible) says, “Here [comes in a call for] the steadfastness of the saints [the patience, the endurance of the people of God], those who [habitually] keep God’s commandments and [their] faith in Jesus.”  The actual manifestation of the victory here is not until Jesus comes on the White Horse in Revelation 19.  I believe that these 144,000 can be compared to the Wise Virgins in Matthew 25; they were ready when the Lord returned.

I submit that as we go through the trials and tribulations of life that if we stay honest and in the Word, that Jesus will put a New Song in our hearts and mouths, and that New Song will bring Him back on our scene for deliverance in the here and now.

Habakkuk found out about this when God told him about the coming destruction of his enemies.  Habakkuk found out that the enemy’s attack was not even something that they planned, but the Lord planned it for their destruction.  Habakkuk stayed in the Word, saw the end from the beginning and sang the New Song in chapter 3:17-19 (Amplified Bible) which says,  “Though the fig tree does not blossom and there is no fruit on the vines, [though] the product of the olive fails and the fields yield no food, though the flock is cut off from the fold and there are no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will rejoice in the Lord (JOY); I will exult in the [victorious] God of my salvation!  The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and will make me to walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make [spiritual] progress upon my high places [of trouble, suffering or responsibility]!”

Habakkuk also knew about Grace!  Notice he did not take it upon himself to perform some impossible spiritual feat when he was under the pile, but he said that God would perform.  All Habakkuk needed was the information; God would supply the power.  The information comes from the Word under the Holy Spirit anointing.

God supplies our Joy, which brings the New Song, which brings deliverance.

But we need two ingredients before God can mix them and create Joy:

1.  Like in John 2 at the Cana wedding, we need to be empty earthen vessels.  No pride, no deceit, just empty and honest.

2.  We must fill our empty vessels with Water, or the Word.

3.  Then Jesus takes over and turns the Water (the Word) into Wine (Joy), and we burst out with the New Song!

What about Paul and Silas in Acts 16:19-31?

When the owners of the slave girl realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.

They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews and are throwing our city into an uproar by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”  The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten.  After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.  Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.  Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.  But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”  The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”  They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your household” (Acts 16:19-31).

Maybe something like this happened.

“Paul, are you ok?”  “Sure Silas, I’m rubbing my sore back up against this moist jail wall trying to get some relief.”  “Paul, do you think they will kill us?”  “I don’t know Silas, I can’t think about that right now… there is something coming up in my chest that is overtaking me.”  “What is it Paul?”  “I’m not sure Silas, it feels like music though.”  “Silas, I feel a song coming up and I can’t keep it down.”  “Yeah, Paul I feel it too.  Here it comes… let’s let it rip!”

And the  notes rose up and flew out of the cell bars into the next cells.  Then   they went out of the jail and hit the atmosphere.  They   kept rising in the Ionosphere, the Stratosphere, and all the other spheres,  until the Father bent His neck and said to an angel, “What is that I hear, angel?”   “Ah, Sir, it sounds like music, but that’s pretty common up here.”  “No, angel, this is different, this sounds New, kind of like a New Song.

The Father could not restrain Himself any longer, He loved the sounds  so much and He started tapping His foot.  Since the Earth is the Lord’s footstool, the Earth reacted pretty violently when it felt the tap of the Father.  “Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the very foundations of the prison were shaken; and at once all the doors were opened and everyone’s shackles were unfastened” (Acts 16:26, Amplified Bible).

In Isaiah 54:1-3 God says (paraphrased), “Sing, O Barren woman.  Forget your former shame. Expand your tent.  You haven’t been fruitful?  Watch Me.  Sing and enlarge your tent so you have a place to put the baby when it comes, not just one kid but to the left and right.  More than one child, many children; not just one blessing, but many will be multiplied.”

If you say, “But I don’t deserve it?”  Don’t believe that.  Your failures only worked to break the oppression and gave God the opportunity to do His thing in your weakness.

Learn the life begetting power of singing.  Job 38 says the angels sang at creation.  God creates with song; possibilities we could never develop with our own resources.
