This is a quotation from the late Pastor Richard Wumbrand.

"A man asked St. Macarius, ‘What does it mean to die to the world?’ Macarius answered, ‘Go to the cemetery, stop before every grave and say insulting words to the dead.’ The man wondered at this command but did as he was told. Macarius sent him again, this time to stop before every grave and say flattering words to the dead. This he also did.

Macarius then asked, ‘Were the dead angry when you insulted them?’ ‘No,’ was the answer. ‘Were they pleased when you complimented them?’ The answer was again, ‘No.’

Macarius pointed out the intended lesson: ‘This then is what it means to die to the world.’"
